Application: Reality to Animation
The movie industry has been mixing reality and non-reality worlds for many years through creative artists who draw the elaborate scenes to replace the famous blue screen. Today the need to mix actor’s motions and digital images made in a CAD environment require new technology. Through the use of High Definition Surveying (HDS) complete sets can be scanned and modeled. These 3D models can be used with digitally created images to create a realistic scene.
Application: Imagination to Parts
Disney needed new store displays made before the Christmas rush. The displays were to be 6 feet tall and be shipped to their outlet stores all over the world. A fast and inexpensive process needed to be developed to create and manufacture the displays. The Disney modeler hand sculpted the figure out of clay and a 3D laser scanner was used to digitize the miniature. From the digitized point cloud a CAD model is made and scaled to size. Foam molds were cut on a CNC machine using the new scaled up model at several machine shops around the world. The full size plastic parts were made and final assembly was done at the Disney Store.
