Application: Propeller Repair

NASSCO has the task of upgrading and repairing ships for the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet. One of those tasks includes repairing the ship’s propellers. As the propeller cuts through the water, the leading edge gets damaged by debris and worn by the water. A detailed surface map of the propeller is made using precision metrology equipment and software. This map shows the welder where the propeller needs material added or removed.

  Application: Modular Shipbuilding

  Most modern day shipbuilders have adopted the concept of modular construction. This   means a complete ship is designed in a CAD program so individual sections (modules) will   interlock together during construction. Through the use of laser trackers, these modules can   be held to high tolerances avoiding the removal of traditional excess material. During the   assembly process, the use of multiple robotic total stations can track the real time of the   module and speed up the alignment to the existing structure.
